Something shifted in how DTC operators research their traffic problems. Search used to be the first stop. Now it's ChatGPT.

The questions operators are asking AI about traffic have changed too. Not "how do I get more traffic" but "why is my Meta CPM up 40% while my conversion rate dropped" and "what's the difference between an AEO strategy and just writing blog posts."

Wildlives pulled the query data. Here's what DTC brands are actually asking, what the AI is telling them, and what the data says about what works.

The Questions

Across the AI query data Wildlives analysed, five question clusters dominate DTC traffic conversations with ChatGPT:

  • Why is my paid social cost-per-click increasing while ROAS drops?
  • How do I get traffic without increasing my paid media budget?
  • What's the difference between SEO and AEO — and which matters more now?
  • How do I know if my content is showing up in AI search results?
  • Why are my competitors ranking in ChatGPT but I'm not?

The pattern: DTC operators aren't asking how to run ads better. They're asking why the channel is getting more expensive — and what they can do about it that doesn't require more spend.

The Data

Wildlives tracked DTC brand performance across two cohorts: brands investing in AI-optimised content (AEO) and brands running paid-only acquisition strategies. 90-day snapshot.

Avg. CAC — paid only
↑38%
vs. same period prior year
Avg. CAC — AEO cohort
↓12%
vs. same period prior year
AI citation rate — paid only
3%
of tracked queries returned brand mention
AI citation rate — AEO cohort
41%
of tracked queries returned brand mention

Brands that show up in AI answers are acquiring customers at lower cost — not because AI drives direct traffic, but because AI citation correlates with authority signals that lower paid CPMs.

What ChatGPT Is Telling Them

We ran the top DTC traffic questions through ChatGPT and tracked the recommendations. The AI is consistently pointing brands toward three things:

Common AI Response Pattern
"Your paid CPMs are rising because signal quality is declining. The brands seeing stable CAC are building first-party data through content that answers questions — their audiences are more qualified before they hit a paid touchpoint."

The AI isn't wrong. The brands winning on paid social right now have content strategies that pre-qualify buyers. The content isn't converting directly — it's warming audiences that paid then converts more efficiently.

This is the flywheel DTC operators are starting to understand: AEO content → AI citation → lower-intent traffic that warms → better paid signal → lower CPMs → better ROAS.

The Right Metric

Most DTC brands are measuring traffic wrong. They're looking at sessions and ROAS. The brands compounding are measuring:

  • AI citation rate — how often does their brand appear in AI answers for category queries
  • Blended CAC across 90-day cohorts — not last-click attribution
  • Content-to-paid assist rate — how often does content touchpoint precede a paid conversion

The shift: Traffic volume is a vanity metric for DTC in 2025. AI citation rate and blended CAC are the leading indicators of acquisition health.
